Traveling and First Day in Oslo with the Leukemia Lady

Throwing caution to the wind, and the fact that there have been no more vasovagal incidents, we woke up and headed to the airport for the long schlep to Oslo. The first leg was from Nashville to New York, a short 2.5-hour flight, arriving at 4 pm.

Our flight to Oslo did not depart until near midnight, so we thought we would seek out a lounge that offered day passes to bide our time. We arrived at Terminal 8 and departed from Terminal 7. No big deal, right?

To reach Terminal 8 we had to take the AirTrain, which required us to leave a secure area, meaning we would have to go through security again, a big bummer. Upon reaching the Norse check-in we were informed that we were unable to check-in for four hours! Oh, joy! No amenities on the unsecured side of check-in at JFK. Key information here. If you have a long layover and have to change terminals, stay put in the one where you arrived, until a few hours before your next flight.

A few hard chairs and many, many people were our options. Not a fan. Sooooo, we decided to cruise on over to the TWA hotel; Terminal 5. Back to the AirTrain, and let me tell you, that is no easy feat!

Once we hauled our luggage through the lobby at the TWA Hotel, we found a cozy sunken lounge and plopped.

We had a great time experiencing the 60’s, and were so grateful for a comfy place to relax. If you are ever at JFK airport, with a long layover, I highly recommend this travel hack. I will also say, do not buy the crepes; blek.

I wish that I could report that I was in tiptop shape, but I am still feeling a little puny. Hoping it is going to pass quickly.

We stayed at TWA until 9:30 and headed back to Norse check-in. The line was long and the terminal was hot, so I opted to take a wheelchair, which was a total blessing. The security was one of the most disorganized messes I have ever seen.

The flight on Norse was amazing! The seats reclined and had leg rests so that was a total score. We were able to get some sleep and woke up in Oslo!

There was a wheelchair waiting at arrival, and I am not above taking help when it is available, saving my precious energy for other things. The gentleman pushing the chair brought us right through customs with no waiting in a very long line, straight to the train ticket counter and onto the train. It was seamless! The ticket lady said we wouldn’t make the next train because it left in two minutes, but my wheelchair pusher made sure we got on it! He was amazing!

Two stops and we were in downtown Oslo. We walked out of the train station and wondered where our hotel might be; we looked across the street and there it was; SCORE! A most perfect location with a gorgeous view! The gal at the front desk told us we could check-in early and that she was going to give us her favorite room. The views from our bed are incredible,

Struggling not to give in to our exhaustion, we were determined to stay awake until at least 8 pm, so we headed out to wander the city. It was not long before we met up with a group of schoolboys wanting to take selfies with us. Of course, we obliged.

We loved hearing about their traditions and watching them go from floating saunas to cold water. I was amazed at the amount of people, in their underwear, going from sauna to water, over and over again.

Next, we hiked up to the Opera House and enjoyed the view, we could even see our hotel room from the rooftop. I was impressed that I was able to make it to the top. Afterward, we continued to meander and found a lovely outdoor market with people selling their wares. There is a lovely church that we plan to visit tomorrow, and hope to enjoy the booths a little more, when we are not so tired.

We grabbed a few things to eat at the market and headed back, proud that we made it till 7 pm. A few episodes of “Emily in Paris” Season 3 and it was lights out!

Hopefully, we will get a great night’s sleep and feel fabulous in the morning.

Night, y’all!
