Off to Zurich, Switzerland, and the Asshole Car Rental Dude

Today we are headed to Zurich, Switzerland. Joe and Gabe are flying there also, and we will meet them at the airport. We arrive at 2:00 pm and they arrive at 4:00 and 5:00 pm.

Our flight was pleasant enough, despite leaving at 9:15 AM! The only hiccup was that we were required to check our carry-on luggage, which I’m not a fan of. To save my energy for more enjoyable activities, I chose to use a wheelchair at the airport when we landed. While waiting at the carousel for our luggage, I suggested, “Let’s guess when our bags will arrive.”

My daughter picked 23 and her bag was number 10, I picked 32 and and mine was 32!!

We all had a good laugh until I noticed that my luggage had been damaged! Of course, right? One of the wheels is almost completely broken off. I reported it, so I guess we’ll see what happens. My poor little bag has only been checked twice, as I always prefer to carry on. At least it did not get lost!

The next bit of luck is the boy’s flights were delayed. Joe is in Madrid and Gabe is in London, and they are both delayed. Fortunately, we found a cafe near the luggage and were able to wait for them. Thinking our luck had changed, they arrived within minutes of each other.

The next stop was the car rental counter; which sent us to the place where the cars were picked up. I had rented a car months ago. When we arrived, in the garage to pick up the car, the man said that our car was no longer available because we were late. I honestly thought that he was kidding, but he was not. He said our reservation had been held for 3 hours and they gave it to someone else.

We were totally confused and befuddled. We explained that the plane was late and out of our control, but he claimed he did not have the flight numbers so it wasn’t his problem.

I know that I put the flight numbers in the reservation, but I had no proof. He also told me that I had already been charged for the rental, of the the car I had reserved, months ago, but could not have it. But if I paid double, then I could have a different car.

He was such an asshole I cannot even tell you! He refused to get a manager and basically said if we did not take his offer we would have no car.

We walked down to the other car rental counters and they were all out of cars, so we took the car, paying double!  Needless to say, I will be fighting this charge when I get home. What a scam! ASSHOLE!

Once we got in the car,  we put the lovely airport experiences behind us; Welcome to Switzerland!

On the way to our Airbnb, we stopped at the tiniest market I have ever seen. We were tole it was the only option for food on a Sunday. It was a mini Migros and 100% self-serve with no one attending the store; total honor system, I guess.

With enough provisions for dinner and breakfast, we headed to Wildeberg. We are staying in a renovated Old Mill from the 1700s. And it is magical!  The owners did a magnificent job renovating an old mill adding new amenities while keeping the old history and charm.

Their property is gorgeous. They have horses, sheep, and chickens! A stream runs through the property and many other old buildings that someday they hope to renovate, too.

It is about 30-40 minutes outside of Zurich and I highly recommend staying here if you ever come to Switzerland!

Despite being exhausted, we took a short walk to brighten our spirits. We saw herds of sheep and cows and even heard the cow bells as they moved around. I never realized that cowbells were a “real” thing! We also heard church bells chiming in the distance.

We can hardly wait until morning to explore more of our surroundings, but for now, I am pooped!

What a day!

Night y’all!
